Hundreds of turf & equipment professionals participated in the annual field day, golf tournament, and seminar events held at Royal Kunia Country Club on May 16 and at Honolulu Country Club on May 17, 2013. The events were great and the best part is the gathering of old friends and meeting new acquaintances.
For the equipment field day and golf tourney on the 16th, we were blessed with wonderful weather and terrific hosts Jared Nomitsu and his staff at Royal Kunia Country Club set up the equipment areas and golf course beautifully. The greens were slippery fast and many of us were grateful that the golf tournament had a two putt max rule. Congratulations to Domingo Madriaga of Kapalua Golf Course for winning the 43" Plasma HDMI TV!!
Even the practice putting green was super slick. For our traditional putting contest, we were looking for 5 players to place a 50 foot putt within 10 feet from the hole (a HUGE 20 foot diameter circle). It took 27 players to find the skillful 5. The wait was worth it for Inoke Taufa of Friendly Isle Landscaping; he won the grand prize of a LED flat screen TV.
Dozens of turf equipment were presented at the field day. Participants had a chance to get personal face time with mainland repís from Jacobsen, Ventrac, Sisis, Turfco, and Smithco. Detailed presentations included the new Jacobsen Fairway Mower with computerized speed control, the versatile Ventrac unit that easily climbed the steep bank behind hole 18, the Sisis Veemo verticutter that flung a rooster tail even at reduced rpm, the new Turfco spinner topdresser with calibration settings allowing for accurate and consistent drop rates, the reliable and high grade Smithco sprayer and the dual drive Smithco greens roller that ran up the hill above the practice putting green. Several popular Kioti Tractors were also there with attachments from Vertidrain, First Products, Progressive Turf, & Lely. There was a new hybrid utility vehicle from American Sportsworks a 4x4 that runs on either battery or gas, at the flick of a switch. Many more turf maintenance toys were displayed for all to view and touch.
The seminars and trade show at Honolulu Country Club on May 17 drew a record crowd with well over 300 participants. Highly informative sessions were provided by experts, many flown in especially for the event. Valuable credits for RUP Applicators, GCSAA Certified Superintendents, Arborists, and Certified Landscape Technicians were awarded. Itís always helpful to keep current with the new developments in the industry. It was also great to see many old friends and meet new ones too.
A warm mahalo goes to all those who attended and supported the events. We hope to see you again next year!
